Old and New TLK Plush Comparison

Description

I have this picture as a comparison of old and new plush.

The Simba and Nala to the left were made by Mattel and widely available in 1994. They are made with a thicker plush material and are sewn into a firm sitting and laying position, respectively. They have iridescent painted plastic eyes. I recall being disappointed by the color choices of these plush and considered them inaccurate, especially the white paws and muzzle, brown tuft of hair for Simba, and brown-edged ears for Simba (in the movie, they're black-edged). The faces also don't look much like the characters in the movie, though they are very cute and look like baby cubs.

The Simba and Nala on the right are recent Disney Store releases. These are the 2010 versions, which are slightly smaller and less chubby than the currently available 2011 versions. These are my favorite Simba and Nala pair and have features that I wanted to see in these character plush since I was little: movie-accurate colors; a floppy poseable body that can convincingly sit, stand, and lay; and accurate characterization (the plush look move like Simba and Nala did in the movie).

These have very short-pile plush like most other stuffed animals made by Disney today. At first I wasn't a fan, thinking it cheap, but from my own experiences in sewing, I can see that it has benefits: if a thicker material was used in this size of plush, the body wouldn't be nearly so poseable. These plush are weighted with beans in the paws and bottom, helping them hold a pose.

I think it can also be difficult to pull off good characterization with thicker plush due to the fact that it makes sewing in tight corners, such as the face, very challenging. I am a fan of using embroidery to further express details that are easily drawn in 2D but are hard to pull off in a plush: nostrils, eyebrows, detailed eyes. Embroidered eyes, while they can snag, are more durable than their very easily scratched plastic counterparts.
